The Grinch – coming from the prestigious Illumination studio, known for its signature adorable and brilliantly colorful animated works like Minions and The Secret Life of Pets, it’s not difficult to understand the heartfelt connection audiences have with the new version of the Grinch – a character from the childhood of countless generations. From character design, setting construction to the selection of film music, all aspects demonstrate a meticulous investment by the producers and the team for the studio’s sole “spiritual child” of the year.
Adorable Character Design and Whimsical Voice, Distinctive Portrayal of Personality
Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy, the powerhouse producer duo behind the Illumination empire, devoted considerable thought and set high standards when selecting the voice actor for The Grumpy Green Grinch. In the end, the chosen one was none other than one of the most renowned Hollywood actors today – Benedict Cumberbatch.
True to the team’s expectations, upon hearing Benedict’s voice as the Grinch, everyone unanimously agreed that this was a perfect choice. Meledandri reserved his most enthusiastic praise for Benedict Cumberbatch: “Cumberbatch truly brings a completely new version of the Grinch – one that is not only more humane and humorous but also more wicked. Additionally, he contributed many creatively rich ideas to us. It’s fantastic that we can leverage his outstanding talent.” The “Supreme Sorcerer” himself is also quite enamored with this rendition of the Grinch, as the latest masterpiece from Illumination delves deep into the Grinch’s childhood story and includes improvements to character design.
In The Grinch, Cindy-Lou is a young girl living with her hardworking single mother, Donna, and mischievous twin brothers. On Christmas Eve, she plans to trap Santa Claus to ask for help for her struggling mom. Audiences adore Cindy-Lou as she embodies a kind Christmas angel, characterized by generosity, compassion, and boundless love for her mother. It is these qualities that melt the Grinch’s heart, making him believe in the goodness of humanity and serving as the key to unlocking the Grinch’s resentment towards Christmas.
The Meticulous and Elaborate Construction of Each Film Setting
One of the goals that Illumination set during the process of bringing this six-decade-old story to the big screen was to find a way to make the film resonate with contemporary audiences. For example, the setting of Whoville. In the original Dr. Seuss story, it’s just a small, quiet village. However, in this version of The Grinch, the filmmakers have replaced it with a modern small city featuring Who Foods grocery store, a bus system, and various other vehicles. The shops and storefronts are adorned brightly for the holiday season.
The graphics team of The Grinch has transformed Whoville into one of the most visually stunning settings the studio has ever brought to the screen. In design discussions, the filmmakers presented a meticulously detailed and vibrant overall concept. “We built Whoville like any normal village – a community with people who have jobs and some who struggle to make ends meet, but they still live happily by the mountains. It will be a place where we all feel familiar,” said producer Healy. Additionally, the team drew inspiration from the natural world, such as ice, snow, caves, and mountain ranges, to decorate homes and stores with fitting images and colors, creating a warm space filled with vibrant colors for Whoville.
In stark contrast to the colorful and warm Whoville is the solitary ice cave on Mount Crumpit belonging to the Grinch. The first thing fans of Dr. Seuss can easily notice in The Grinch is that the Grinch’s dark and damp cave has been replaced by a modern and well-equipped dwelling. Not being a gloomy, frightening, and naturally dark place, the Grinch’s cave still has mysterious hues, spacious expanses with large rooms allowing Grinch and Max to live comfortably together.
Music with Emotional Depth from Danny Elfman
In his illustrious career, the talented composer Danny Elfman has written music for numerous films across various genres, from Beetlejuice, Batman to Scrooged, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and even Spider-Man. However, it’s only now that he has the opportunity to collaborate with Illumination. “Alongside the Script and Imagery, Music truly is the third arm supporting storytelling,” remarks producer Meledandri. “So, with The Grinch, we tried to create a space filled with music. Over the past 20 years, I’ve had many discussions with Danny about working together on a film, but the chance never came. And with The Grinch, I don’t think anyone could be more fitting than Danny to compose music for this film.”
Elfman, on his part, expresses his desire to collaborate with Illumination, and The Grinch is an ideal project. He says, “I believe this is the film we should work on together. When talking with Chris, I had a very positive impression of Illumination and the ideas they had for this film. Furthermore, on a personal note, it has been 25 years since I composed music for The Nightmare Before Christmas – a film inspired by the Grinch story. Everything seems perfect, doesn’t it?”
What Elfman finds most meaningful in overseeing the music for The Grinch are the melodies he composed for scenes revolving around the Grinch’s childhood – a time not particularly happy. “These scenes reenact the unforgettable memories of Grinch’s past.” He smiles and shares, “But you know, sorrows always provide me with more emotions to create with.”
Celebrating the Heartwarming Story of the Grinch
The Grinch’s story brings a plethora of positive emotions to the audience, regardless of their age. The clever blend of whimsical humor, meaningful life messages, and profound insights captivates viewers, making them fully engrossed in the film for fear of missing out on its enticing elements.
The Grinch delivers a meaningful message about family and life through the backdrop of the Christmas holiday, drawing from the narrative of Dr. Seuss.
